We, at Ken-Way Services, do not believe in using septic additives to your system. These additives are not needed for your system to work properly. The natural microorganisms that grow in your system generate their own enzymes that sufficiently break down and digest nutrients in waste water. Additives can cause major damage to your drain field and other areas in the collection system especially if they are overused.

What's the difference between a septic tank and a holding tank?

A holding tank collects all waste water that leaves a residence or business. They have an alarm system that alerts the owner when the tank is close to being full and in need of pumping. These systems require more frequent pumping than a septic tank.

A septic tank collects the same waste water as a holding tank, but some of the liquid exits the tank to leech into the soil for final treatment. The tank itself is used to collect the solids and must be cleaned every 1 to 3 years depending on usage. This maintenance is very important to preserve the life of your drainage field.

How does a septic tank work?

The purpose of a septic tank is to treat waste water such as: body wastes, kitchen waste, laundry, and bath water. The minimal use of bleaches, detergents, and soaps does not harm the septic system. As waste enters the tank, solids settle to the bottom, where natural occurring bacterial processes reduce and break the solids down. Liquid wastes and scum rise to the top of the tank, where a baffle or outlet filter retain them in the tank. Liquids flow under the baffle, or through the filter to the distribution system and then are absorbed into the soil and treated by the soil.

To operate properly, a septic system must be designed and constructed to suit the individual needs of the homeowner or business. Criteria such as number of family members and daily water usage impact the sizing of the system. An under sized system can result in numerous problems such as premature failure of the drain field, odor, sewage back-ups, and expense. It is very important to maintain your septic system so that it continues to function properly.
